We Become What We Behold

Q: What is the actual message of this game?

*We Become What We Behold* is a playable fable about modern media ecosystems and echo chambers. It demonstrates how the media, by selectively reporting and amplifying certain aspects of society—especially conflict and anger—ends up actively shaping reality. The title itself gives away the theme: we become the very things we constantly stare at on our screens. If you finish the game feeling a bit chilled, the game did its job perfectly.

*We Become What We Behold* is a short, impactful, and deeply thought-provoking point-and-click sandbox game that takes only about 5 minutes to complete. You step into the role of a news photographer, aiming your lens at a street filled with simple square and circle-headed citizens. Your job seems straightforward: capture everyday moments, snap pictures, broadcast them on the news ticker, and watch how the public reacts to your media. However, this simple loop quickly escalates. You'll soon discover a profound, slightly disturbing fable about the media cycle, confirmation bias, and social contagion. What you choose to broadcast directly dictates how the little people behave, creating a terrifyingly realistic reflection of modern society.

How to Play We Become What We Behold

🎮 Core Gameplay Rules

Snap & Broadcast: Move your camera viewfinder around the screen. When you see something interesting, click to take a picture. The photo is instantly "published" on the TV screens in the game, becoming breaking news for the citizens to see.
Influence & Feedback: The subjects of your photos directly dictate social trends. If you capture someone wearing a hat, everyone wants a hat. But if you capture and highlight conflict, anger will spread through the crowd like a virus.
The Vicious Cycle: As you continue to publish specific types of behavior, those behaviors are amplified by the crowd. People begin to mimic the news, and the societal atmosphere slowly slides from peaceful to extreme.
Point of No Return: This game doesn't have "good" or "bad" choices. Once the media engine catches onto a trend, it will snowball uncontrollably toward the game's inevitable conclusion.
Win State: There are no scores, levels, or traditional "Game Over" screens. The goal is simply to play through the 5-minute experience and absorb the narrative message.

⌨️ Game Controls

Played entirely with the mouse:

Watch carefully as your news feed begins to influence the crowd's emotions and actions, allowing you to experience the complete narrative loop and understand the deep connection between media lenses and societal behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions about We Become What We Behold games

What is the actual message of this game?

We Become What We Behold is a playable fable about modern media ecosystems and echo chambers.

Are there multiple endings? Can I save society by only taking nice photos?

No, there is only one fixed ending. The game is designed to force your hand. No matter how hard you try to only photograph peaceful interactions, the news cycle eventually demands drama. Minor, accidental frictions will occur, and your camera will inevitably be drawn to them. Once the first photo of anger is published, the cycle is unbreakable, and society will spiral into conflict.

Why does the game get so chaotic so quickly at the end?

Because your camera is acting as a social multiplier. At the start, the crowd is diverse and peaceful. But the moment you broadcast anger, you validate it. The people see it on TV and start acting it out. As you take more pictures of the resulting fights, the violence becomes normalized and trendy, accelerating the chaos until the whole screen breaks out into a frenzy.
